What is AI agent?
An AI system that pursues a goal by deciding on steps and using tools, not only by answering one question.
In plain English
An agent is built around a model that can plan, call tools or actions (search, a database, a ticketing system) and look at the results before choosing its next step. Because it can act, it needs clear scope, limited permissions and logging. Many platforms let you restrict an agent to particular jobs.
Example
An agent that checks an order’s status in your system and then emails the customer.
Easy to confuse with
- Prompt engineering: A prompt is a single instruction. An agent is a loop of planning and acting.
