What is API?

A defined way for one piece of software to ask another for data or to do something.

In plain English

API stands for application programming interface. It is a menu of requests that a program is allowed to make, and the format of the answers. The program asking does not need to know how the other side works inside. Web APIs usually send requests over HTTP and return data in a format such as JSON.

Example

A weather app does not measure the weather itself. It sends a request to a weather service’s API and shows what comes back.
