What is Generative AI?
AI that creates new content, such as text, images, code or audio, from a prompt.
In plain English
Instead of only sorting or predicting from existing data, a generative model produces something new that looks like the data it learned from. The same technology powers chat assistants, image generators and code helpers. It can be fluent and still be wrong, so important output needs checking.
Example
Asking a chat assistant to draft an email, or an image model to make a poster from a sentence.
Easy to confuse with
- Large language model (LLM): Generative AI is the broad category. A large language model is one kind, focused on text.
