What is GitOps?
Using a Git repository as the single source of truth for what should be running, with software that keeps the live system matching it.
In plain English
Instead of running commands against a cluster, you change files in Git. A tool such as Argo CD watches the repository and the cluster, and when they differ it brings the cluster back in line (reconciliation). You get a full history, easy review by pull request and an easy rollback by reverting a commit.
Example
To scale an app from 3 to 5 replicas you edit the number in Git and merge. The controller notices and applies the change.
Easy to confuse with
- CI/CD: CI builds and tests code. GitOps deals with how the desired state reaches the cluster.
