What is OpenTelemetry Collector?
A vendor-neutral service that receives telemetry, processes it and sends it on to one or more tools.
In plain English
Its pipeline has three parts: receivers take data in, processors change it (for example batching, filtering or adding attributes) and exporters send it out. Putting a Collector between your apps and your monitoring tools means you can change the destination without changing the apps.
Example
Apps send traces to a local Collector, which batches them and exports to your chosen tracing backend.
