What is Observability?
How well you can understand what is happening inside a system from the data it produces.
In plain English
A system is observable when you can ask new questions about its behaviour without changing the code. The usual raw material is three signals: metrics, logs and traces. Monitoring checks for problems you already expect. Observability helps you investigate ones you did not expect.
Example
When checkout is slow, a trace shows which service in the chain took the time, and logs from that service show the error.
Easy to confuse with
- Metrics, logs and traces: Observability is the goal. Metrics, logs and traces are the data that serves it.
