KUBERNETES AND DEVOPS

What is PromQL?

The query language used to read and calculate on Prometheus metrics.

In plain English

PromQL selects time series by name and labels and then applies functions to them. A counter only ever goes up, so you normally wrap it in rate() to see how fast it is growing. You can also aggregate with functions such as sum and by to group results.

Example

rate(http_requests_total[5m]) gives requests per second averaged over the last five minutes.
