PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND AGILE

What is Work breakdown structure (WBS)?

A hierarchy that breaks the total project scope into smaller, manageable pieces of deliverable work.

In plain English

It starts with the whole project and splits it level by level into work packages that can be estimated, assigned and tracked. The WBS is built from deliverables, not from tasks in time order. It shows what is in scope, so anything not in the WBS is not in scope.

Example

A website project might split into design, build, content and launch, and “build” into front end, back end and testing.

Easy to confuse with

  • Critical path: The WBS shows what the work is. The critical path comes from the schedule and shows how long it takes.
